What Lil Arroyo is Doing Now...

Week 26 is here!  Can you believe it!  Boy am I tired, which means he must be growing like crazy and hopefully that means he is nothing but healthy!  Here's what's going on with him now:

The network of nerves in our baby's ears is better developed and more sensitive than before, in fact his hearing system is now completely formed.  He may now be able to hear both my voice and Roberto's as we chat with each other. He's inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for the development of his lungs. The air sacs of the lungs, called alveoli, will be developed by the end of this week and will begin to secrete a substance called surfactant that keeps the lung tissue from sticking together. These so-called breathing movements are also good practice for when he's born and takes that first gulp of air. And he's continuing to put on baby fat.

His eyes are almost fully formed. Did you know that all babies have blue eyes in the womb, no matter what their genetic inheritance is? A baby's eyes don't get their final color until a few months after they are born. The air sacs of the lungs, called alveoli, will be developed by the end of this week and will begin to secrete a substance called surfactant that keeps the lung tissue from sticking together.

Baby's now the size of an eggplant!
That oh-so-handy sense of equilibrium is kicking in, and baby's learning to distinguish right side up from upside down.  He's beginning to exchange his long, lean look for some baby fat.  (Fat is only cute on babies, right?)  As he does, his wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out and he'll start to look more and more like a newborn. He's also growing more hair (hopefully it's curly) — and we could see it, we'd now be able to discern its color and texture.

He's moving all over the place, kicks, hits, flips, I wish I had a camera to see what in the world he is doing!

Great Weekend

So we are such bums (mainly Roberto) since we didn't really take ANY pictures over the weekend!  I'm so sorry!  Bryon's visit was great, we had a really nice time catching up w/him, the dinners at the house w/friends, trying some new restaurants in Portland, etc etc.  Too bad the weather wasn't just a little better?!  Now, of course the weather is awesome here, the sun is out for the rest of the week!  (And of course I am stuck inside at home w/Lil Arroyo who is tiring me out and making me lose sleep!)  Guess he's prepping me for all those upcoming sleepless nights.

Thanks for coming Bryon!

Gardening???

Well, most of you probably wouldn't call it that but the other night we made a late night run to Home Depot and got some new barkdust for the front yard, a nice pot for the front w/colorful flowers and a cute flower box for the entryway as well!  That's the most "gardening" we have done in our entire lives!  I think the color looks great and gives us a cheerier look with this dreary Portland weather.

Anyways, the front needed to be spruced up a little bit, we have our friend Bryon Carlson coming for the weekend to hang out and give our Memorial talk, can't wait to see him, it's been 4 years!  Will post some pics of the weekend, will be busy with lots of people.  Should be fun!

Week 24!!!

Can you believe it?  6 months has almost gone by since we found out we were having a Lil Arroyo?!  Time flies!  Well the last thing we are on the hunt for now is a good Glider.  Man, are those things expensive!  So checking out other options, various furniture stores, even Craigslist to see what's out there.  Still have time but considering how fast these first 6 months went, he is going to be here in no time and will no doubt need to be rocked to sleep.

In the meantime, here is an update about what's going on during week 24:

Our baby weighs more than a pound and a half right now and sports a crown-to-rump length of about eight and a half inches (standard letter size!).

If we had a baby cam at right now we'd almost be able to tell by now what Lil Arroyo looks like.  His cute face (though still tiny) is almost fully formed.  What's still missing from the picture is the fat that will be piled on under baby's skin.  Until those fat deposits are made, that very tender skin is still very transparent, which means a close look would let you see clear through to all the organs, bones, and blood vessels. Fortunately, that see-through look won't last much longer.  (Hope he has his daddy's coloring and not mine!)  Babies at this stage of fetal development are gaining about six ounces each week — with much of that gain coming from fat, in addition to growing organs, bones, and muscle.

Doctor's Appointment

Friday we had another check-up for Lil Arroyo and he is doing great! The doctor measured my belly and we heard the baby's heartbeat and she said everything is right on track! Hooray!

Week 23 Baby Update - A Papaya???

I can't believe almost 6 months have gone by!  He's the size of a papaya now.  It's amazing.  Lil Arroyo is moving around so much now, I can feel him all the time but mostly at night.  (He's going to be just like his Papa!)

With his sense of movement well developed by now, our baby can feel me dance, move, talk, etc. And now that he's more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound, sometimes we can see my belly move when he squirms and moves.

Blood vessels in his lungs are developing to prepare for breathing, and the sounds that our baby's increasingly keen ears pick up are preparing him for entry into the outside world. Loud noises that become familiar now — such as your dog barking or the roar of the vacuum cleaner — probably won't faze him when he hears them outside the womb.

Cute!

We couldn't pass this up at the store the other day so we went ahead and bought it!  (Trying not to buy too much stuff since we know a lot of it is probably coming in the near future with the baby showers!)  Isn't it cute?  It's the softest blanket and the cutest little beanie for Lil Arroyo!  Can't wait for him to use it!
