Weekend Update

So I meant to post something on Friday after my doctor's appointment but was just too busy w/everything and then we also had convention Saturday and Sunday.  (Boy am I glad we went those 2 days, by July I am going to be too uncomfortable and probably making even more bathroom runs!  Thanks for the great seats Case, the legroom was REALLY appreciated!)

Well the doctor's visit was, as usual, all of 5-10 minutes.  As suspected, and as all previous visits go, it's not my weight gain or the size of my belly that causes the diabetes or any other problem for that matter, it's all in the numbers.  Maybe I have diabetes in my family, who knows???  Although pretty unlikely for being Asian.

So I have 2 more ultrasounds scheduled before Lil Arroyo comes so she can make sure he's still not getting too big and that this diet is indeed working.  Boy it's tough finding a balance w/this diet thing, I mean I still either eat too much in one sitting or not enough and am looking for my next snack every 30 mins to an hour.  It's challenging.  I have my class tonight after work from 630 - 830p so that will be good to get the real info on how to manage all of this, I can start taking my blood sugar levels to really determine how the food is affecting me and after all is said and done, if I can't manage it w/diet, then I can take some meds that are safe for the baby until Lil Arroyo is born.  I'd rather not take anything though, so we'll see....

What else?  Below are a few pics from this weekend, not sure why I don't take more when I'm with people, I will make sure there are plenty of pics taken on Saturday at the shower, I'm so excited!  Family arrives Thu and then here we go for a whirlwind weekend!

So the good news is that I DON'T have to take another test for this but the BAD news is that I do have gestational diabetes!

So I have to go to a class all about my eating next week after work and then meet with a nutritionist to follow-up about how everything's going a week after that.  What a bummer but obviously it will be what's best for me and Lil Arroyo.  It just means I have to do small meals and snacks during the day, no fruit in the morning, avoid sugary things (which I love), prick my fingers 4 times a day to check my blood sugar, yadda yadda, yadda.  Now I have to put a lot more forethought into what I eat vs eating what sounds and tastes good at the time!  O well~I'll read up on it so I can start some good habits in the next week since it IS what's best for the baby.

So I guess I better enjoy this last bowl of spaghetti while I can!

Test was a BUST

So the Friday gestational diabetes test was a total bummer.  The drink made me sick and once you throw-up you invalidate the test so there goes that.  Talked to my doc on Friday afternoon after it all was said and done and she is waiting for some blood results to see what the next step is.  Either I take a modified test this week or do it all over again but I am afraid I will just get sick again???!!!  So who knows....I probably do have it cuz this kid/belly is gettin kinda big rather quickly!

It is SO beautiful today in Portland, in the 70s and gorgeous!  Tomorrow is expected to be even better!  (Even though I will be stuck inside w/my silly diabetes test, maybe they will let me go outside in between the blood work to get a little tan!)  Hooray, tomorrow's Friday!

Week 29 Baby Update

Wanna know what's going on this week w/Lil Arroyo????  Well....lots!

He now weighs about 2 1/2 pounds and is a tad over 15 inches long from head to heel. His muscles and lungs are continuing to mature, and his head is growing bigger to make room for his developing brain. To meet his increasing nutritional demands, I need plenty of protein, vitamins C, folic acid, and iron. And his bones are soaking up lots of calcium!  This trimester, about 250 milligrams of calcium are deposited in your baby's hardening skeleton.

Lil Arroyo's energy is surging, thanks to white fat depositing beneath his skin. And since he's growing so fast (weight will triple by birth), things are getting kind of cramped in the womb. What all this means for you: I have to get ready for some more kicks and jabs to the ribs!  (Lots of kicks but no rib jabbing yet, thank goodness.)

Week 29 Already???

Wow, where does time go?  I can't believe I'm in my third trimester already and it's Week 29!  Crazy.  Lil Arroyo is going to be here before we know it.  We are busy w/the painting, Rob did the blue in the nursery and we are trying to let it dry/air out, picked up lots over the wknd and this morning too so we can do other rooms of the house, exciting to see some changes!  Will post pictures of the final, right now every wall and every room in the house was a beige/cashew color from when we moved in.  Some walls will stay that color but a lot are changing!  It'll be nice when it's all done.  All our paint is low VOC and low odor and the bedroom paint is from Benjamin Moore w/absolutely No VOC or No odor so that's the room I can help out w/the most and obviously probably where I spend most of my time!

We had another prenatal class last night, "Childbirth Prep" and it covered all the general/basics.  Good teacher, WAY better than the last one that we signed up for (and kinda blew off).  She had lots of energy and made it fun.  The only negative is that it was 4 HOURS LONG.  Kinda rough after a full day of work for both of us but at the same time it's nice to get it done in 1 shot.  Some things we knew, some things were new and it was nice to ask questions and hear other's questions too.

I have to take another day off on Friday for the major glucose test to see if I do, indeed, have gestational diabetes!  Ugh~I hope not but I have a feeling I probably do w/all the sugar and carbs I've been eating during this pregnancy!  This poor little baby is gonna be huge!  So, the 1 hr test at the doctor's office was either inconclusive or positive so we'll see what happens Friday.  That one will definitely say I do or don't have it.  If I do, I just have it until after Lil Arroyo comes, no big deal.  It means a modified diet and probably checking my blood sugar throughout the day like a regular diabetic.  Whatever I need to do to ensure he's healthy is fine w/me, but I do love my sweets.....

Lunchtime with Girlfriends

Had lunch yesterday Angie and Kimberly, whom I have not seen in forever!  (Especially Kimberly, I haven't seen her since she's had her 2 kiddies!)  Ruby and Gavin are adorable and very well behaved though~thanks for coming and having lunch w/me guys!

Also a few more pics of my growing belly....I tried to crop these and make them clearer but for some reason it wouldn't work so sorry the quality is kinda grainy and bad...you get the point...

Weekend Update

So I know I am a little late with my weekend update but thought I would still post the latest baby news.  We had a regular check-up on Friday morning and everything is going well.  The doctor says I am right on track with the measurement of my belly and we listened to the strong, fast heartbeat.  He's doing great!

We also went to Home Depot to pick out paint for Lil Arroyo's room and got tons of samples.  We went home and put them up all over the walls so we could decide what we liked the most.  We've been in this house almost 4 years now and for about 3 years have been wanting to change some of the paint, add some more color to it.  I guess now is our chance before the baby comes or it may take another 4 years to get more samples.  So needless to say we have color samples up all over the place in our house, still debating how to get it all done (enlist family, friends, or pay someone to come in and do it all at once) but I think we are going to try and do it before the baby comes.  It will just be a nice fresh start and change.  We won't be painting the ENTIRE house, but quite a few rooms.  We'll start w/Lil Arroyo's room first though.....we also got the Winnie the Pooh wall decals yesterday so we are excited to get the paint going!!!!!

27 Weeks

This week, our baby weighs almost 2 pounds (like a head of cauliflower) and is about 15 inches long with his legs extended.  He's sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing his eyes, and perhaps even sucking his fingers.  (How cute!)  With more brain tissue developing, Lil Arroyo's baby's brain is very active now. While his lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if he were to be born now.

Any tiny rhythmic movements I might be feeling could be a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. (I was wondering what those were!) Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don't bother him thankfully, they are just a little bit strange.

To Glide or Not to Glide....

...THAT is the question.  So there is a lot of discussion about getting a glider (rocking chair) for the nursery to help put the baby to sleep or not to get it.  There is a lot in writing (and talking to other moms) from doctors, "experts," etc about perhaps NOT getting one and letting your baby "self-soothe" or put himself to sleep.  Some mothers say w/in the first 4 wks their baby learned to put themselves to sleep versus being dependent on the parent rocking them to sleep or feeding them until they went to sleep.  Magazines I've read say to do whatever you are doing to get them almost to sleep and then when they are still just a little bit awake put them down so they fall asleep on their own.  Otherwise they may wake up as soon as you put them down and it becomes a vicious cycle.  Who knows?

So the other option is to wait until after Lil Arroyo comes and see how it goes.  He may be able to sleep w/o a glider, who knows?  OR, we may be kicking ourselves for not already having one!  They are really nice but not super cheap and finding the right one that doesn't look like something you inherited from your granny is another challenge.  So, we'll see what we decide to do in the next few months.
