Weekend at the Beach

We wanted a little R&R before Lil Arroyo comes so we rented a house w/my family this last weekend.  It was just outside of Tillamook, OR in Netarts.  I had never been there but it was fantastic and we couldn't have had better weather.  It was the first time Roberto had ever been to the OR Coast since he's lived out here and the first time I had been to the Coast in YEARS.  The weather on Saturday afternoon at Pacific City, sitting on the beach watching the waves and people was great!  Sunny and warm, we actually got tans!

The house we rented turned out to be super nice as well, what a great deal.  We cooked, we ate, we watched movies, played games and SOME of us slept in.  (Thx Lil Arroyo!)  All in all it was a nice weekend and once Lil Arroyo is here we can take him down too!

More Baby Shower Pics - 6/18/11

Sorry these are so overdue and it looks like I didn't get as many good shots as I thought I did but here are some from my congregation baby shower.  It turned out so great and Danielle did a fantastic job!

Week 34 Baby Update

Our baby now weighs about 5 lbs and is almost 18 inches long.  (Think bag of sugar.)  Articles say he will gain about 2 more lbs in the next 6 wks!  His fat layers — which will help regulate his body temperature once he's born — are filling him out, making him rounder.  (Why is it that we only think fat is cute on babies????)  Lil Arroyo's skin is also smoother than ever. His central nervous system is maturing and his lungs are continuing to mature as well.

Now that his brain has formed billions of neurons, it must accomplish the even more complex feat of hooking the neurons and synapses together. The brain is forming trillions of connections, making it possible for him to learn in the womb. All of this brain development may be the reason that Lil Arroyo sleeps frequently at this stage.  He may even be dreaming—his eyes dart around rapidly just as an adult's might in REM sleep.  (Too bad we don't have a camera in there to watch him!)

INTERESTING FACT:  Our child's development is in no way complete at birth. In the first year after birth, a baby's brain triples in size and becomes three-quarters of its adult size.

Happy Monday!

Whew!  Busy weekend, needless to say it was very hard to get up this morning!  Woodlawn Congregation shower on Sat afternoon, a small graduation party on Sunday afternoon at our house, busy busy busy!  But it was fun and EVERYTHING turned out great.  I think I might take a nap at lunchtime!

We also had a check-up with the doctor on Friday afternoon, scheduled the next and last ultrasound for mid-July and the medicine seems to be helping my blood sugar so that's good news.  All is well w/Lil Arroyo too, just growing, growing, growing.  I think he might be coming early but Rob thinks he is coming late.  (GREAT.)

Pictures from the weekend will be posted during the week.  Thanks to everyone that helped with the shower and came to the graduation party, we had lots of fun!

Week 33 Baby Update

Boy is Lil Arroyo growing!  He will be here before we know it!

Baby's now the size of a honeydew!
Things are heating up inside as well:  He may grow up to a full inch this week alone, and his brain is developing like crazy.  Pretty soon, Lil Arroyo will be able to coordinate breathing with sucking and swallowing.  Also, his bones are hardening, and he's started to keep his eyes open when he's awake.

This week he weighs a little over 4 pounds (which was confirmed by the ultrasound last Fri, he's about 4.4lbs) and has passed the 17-inch mark.  He's rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and his skeleton is hardening.  (Thank goodness!)  The bones in his skull aren't fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap, thus making it easier for him to fit through the birth canal. (The pressure on the head during birth is so intense that many babies are born with a conehead-like appearance.  Hope it goes away quickly!)  These bones don't entirely fuse until early adulthood, so they can grow as his brain and other tissue expands during infancy and childhood.

Diabetes Update

So I had another doc appt on Fri with another ultrasound (when you have diabetes you get a few extra ultrasounds) although Lil Arroyo was being just as stubborn as usual and wouldn't show his face!  He had both his arms up covering so it almost looks like he has a mask on.  After some poking and prodding from the tech he finally put the furthest arm down but still wouldn't budge with the other one.  What a little stinker!

Everything looked fine though, he is about 4.4 lbs and there is still enough space in my belly and fluid in there for him.  It doesn't feel like it much these days though!  He feels like he is getting super big and is pushing out on my tummy in all shapes and sizes these days!  Not very comfortable!

The diabetes is still a challenge and getting my numbers down is still a challenge, they are still a little higher than they should be even w/a pretty strict diet.  Therefore the doc started me on meds that won't hurt me or the baby.  So we'll see what that does.  The body is a funny thing because the last few days my numbers have actually been where they are supposed to be (amazing as that sounds) but that is very random and just 1 pill a day should hopefully get everything down to where they should be.  Follow-up with a nutritionist again this wk and then yet another doc appt on Friday.  Will have another ultrasound next month too.
